Poco: A 2D/3D Hybrid Point-and-Click Game

Poco is a 2D/3D hybrid point-and-click adventure game where you play as Poco, a two-inch tall clown who is banished from a giant walking circus, and left to fend for themselves in the undergrowth of the Below World, where they befriend and enlist the help of the local homunculus population to build a rocket.



I completed various early iterations for nearly every character on Poco, and took the designs of Poco, Nari, and The Council of Clowns to the finish line.

Poco
the worlds smallest clown

What?

Create the design for the main character, Poco, a two inch clown that is banished from the Circus in the Sky. A mysterious clown creature with lots of charm. Will be made into a 3D model.

How?

The world of Poco is a whimsical one and I wanted that to reflect on the main character design. Because of his height and because he is the main character, I wanted Poco's design to be captivating, adorable, memorable, and likeable. After a few iterations, I noticed Poco needed variety within his proportions and that led me to making his clown features stand out through scale, like the tall hat, big shoes, nose, and collar, compared to his tiny body.

Nari
the sense of smell

What?

Create the design for the homunculus that represents the sense of smell. A quiet and shy plant lover. Will be made into a 3D model.

How?

Nari is a very special design for me. The first iterations I made were very simple but I believe that's the charm of Nari. The huge nose very obviously represents the sense of smell and her walleyes hint to her being a very shy, inoffensive, and silly creature. I stuck to earthy tones with a pop of purple to highlight her friendliness. Overall, Nari became a fan favorite and even though her design is not overly complicated, I enjoyed bringing her to life.

The Council of Clowns
the villains

What?

Create the design for the villains of Poco, a council of clowns that judges and banishes Poco from the Circus in the Sky. They are mysterious, powerful and eerie creatures that represent the mainstream and classical clowns. Will be made into a 3D model.

How?

The world of Poco is very whimsical yet we needed the eeriness of the Council of Clowns to not clash with the established style. We needed their design to contrast that whimsy in an intentional way to represent their darkness compared to the Below-World, where Poco truly belongs. 

I researched the different types of clowns in history and got to ideating. I also explored the form the clowns would take, and the team decided on floating heads/masks. I wanted their color palette to be unified but different, strong and full of contrast, like those found on poisonous frogs and fish.
